What is Roller Derby?
Women’s roller derby is a full contact, aggressive and competitive sport played on traditional quad skates and on either a banked or a flat track.
How do you play Roller Derby?
Current day roller derby is played by WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby) http://www.wftda.com/ *** rules whereas each team is comprised solely of four women from each team skating counter clock-wise while playing offense and defense simultaneously. Each team has one jammer who tries to score points for their respective team. Skaters may use designated parts of their body (such as hips, booty and shoulders) to hit and displace the opposing teammates. Minor and major penalties are given based on the severity of each penalty such as elbowing, punching, tripping, etc.. Too many minors, or just one major, will result in a skater spending a minute in the penalty box. Of course there is more to playing such as strategy but we wouldn’t want to give our secrets away!
Why Play Roller Derby?
There are many reasons women to want to lace up a pair of skates. Most women who are seen booty checking enjoy the camaraderie on and off the track as well as the competitive nature of the sport. Not to mention that skating on a regular basis can help maintain a healthy workout schedule. Many skaters also bond and create lifelong friendships. There is definitely more to roller derby than just hitting and blocking.
